HISTORY It's the castle's most recent history, however, that has played an important role in European and world history. On June 26, 1944, at 4 p.m., the only peace treaty signed between the Germans and Americans at the end of the Second World War, The Surrender of Cherbourg, was signed by General Karl Wilhelm von Schlieben and General Joseph Lawton Collins on the desk in the château's drawing room. This is how the château earned its prestigious nickname of Château D'Day. The D'Day Story- On June 19, 1944, General Karl Wilhelm von Schlieben took control of German forces in the Cotentin peninsula. The peninsula was defended by the 709th Infantry Division, the strongest unit, by elements of three other weakened units, and by part of the 77th Division, which had come from Brittany and been split by the Cotentin cut. The American forces attacked with three groups of forces. The Americans broke through west of Montebourg, while the Germans retreated under cover of rain along the Valognes-Quettehou axis. The following day, on June 20, 1944, the 79th American Infantry Division was in front of Valognes, circling the town to the west. Yvetot-Bocage was liberated. On June 21, 1944, patrols from the 4th Infantry Division discovered that Valognes had been cleared of army forces. The fortress of Cherbourg surrendered on June 26, 1944. General von Schlieben and Admiral Hennecke were taken to Château de Servigny near Yvetot-Bocage, where General Collins set up his headquarters. On June 26, 1944 at 4 pm, The Surrender of Cherbourg, the only peace treaty signed during the Second World War, was signed by American General Joseph Lawton Collins and German General Karl Wilhelm Von Schlieben in the salon of Château de Servigny.
